Elite College Advising

In June, Syracuse chancellor Michael Haynie told faculty the university would miss its fall 2026 undergraduate enrollment target and run its first budget deficit in years. He pointed to a shrinking pool of 18-year-olds and falling international applications. Reporting since then, including in The Wall Street Journal, adds another piece: in spring 2025, Syracuse offered large late merit packages to admitted students who had already said no, and the university says it won’t do that again.

What this means for your student

At schools like Syracuse, merit aid is a pricing decision, not a verdict on your student. The same applicant can get very different offers depending on how badly a school needs to fill seats that year. That’s leverage. Compare offers side by side, and don’t treat the first number as final.
